An old version of a website many have many specific pages – when these are linked to as (for example) pagename.html – this makes changing the website difficult while maintaining a smooth change over for search engines.

It is better for SEO to use “meaningful” paths like example.com/about rather than refer to specific pages: example.com/about.html.

The more pages with different content attached to them that cross reference or become targets for social sharing – the better. When using some site builders, or a single page approach with lots of subjects on it, then it is likely that links in will be concentrated to that page and that will limit the page rank for the site.

So the best practise is to plan ahead of development a basic set of departments:

e.g.

/about
/shop
/contact
/gallery

that lead to the index (home) page in each – (or overridden during an upgrade).

Now, when you want to add subcategories – it is simple:

/about/products
/shop/hardware
/shop/software
/gallery/artist
/gallery/artist/music
/gallery/artist/music/Peter+Gabriel

It is also easier to change the underlying website for an upgrade without losing your valuable links in, or your SEO marbles.

Windows 8 Pro upgrade on a Windows 7 laptop went smoothly, except one piece of software no longer works: Avid (film editing). It turns out this package was sold by Avid to Corel and they seem to not know if a Windows 8 upgrade will ever be available.

Asking Corel Support about this:

Question: Have upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8 and Avid no longer works. Is there any upgrade path now or in the future or do I need to buy another high quality video editing suite?

Support: Hi Nicholas.
You: Hello

Support: You can try the latest version of Pinnacle Studio which is version 16. Here’s the link for details.

You: is that as high quality as Avid? And does anyone there know if a Win8 upgrade for Avid will be available? I have projects in progress that I can not work on!

Support: Yes.
Support: That is the latest version.

You: Yes. but is an upgrade for Avid planned? I also use Corel Video Studio for minor projects,

Support: We have no updates yet if there will be an upgrade or latest version for AVID Studio.

The other thing that needs attention is ATI Catalyst – which is something to do with the display driver. Odd as that seems to work, however the sound channel control keeps losing the connection to a connected TV via HDMI which is a concern.

Other than that, the new version of Windows appears very stable and I do like the user interfaces (there are now two, Metro – sort of live preview tiles, and the regular desktop we have come to know and abuse by putting too many icons on it!)

Windows 8 is generally faster and appears problem free, except for (rare) software compatibility problems.

Do Not Track settings are now available in your browser that sent a header with the server http request. It is simply a request that advertisers respect your wish to not store tracking cookies on your computer.

What is interesting is that the setting is a) voluntary, and b) usually set to a default of OFF (i.e. the browser does NOT send the header request).

In all its wisdom, Microsoft releases IE10 on Windows 8 with the default set so that the browser DOES send the header – requiring the user to intervene if they WANT to be tracked by advertisers via cookies. You know, adverts that are like what you recently searched or, or have bought already. Web advertisers are not required to honour the header, it is essentially advisory, a nice thing to do, not a contract.

This certainly appears to be a very benevolent act on Microsoft’s part (offering “maximum privacy” to the user by default) but the effect may mean the advertisers will see no merit in honouring this default setting as it would mean losing their business model so simply do not.

The Apache server was patched for some time to ignore the setting from IE10, but that patch has been removed. Therefore businesses will now possibly do the same, if it is IE10, then they will very likely ignore the Do Not Track setting.

So for the people who want to protect their web trails, the answer may be to use another browser. Or utilise plugins that control which sites can set tracking cookies or use incognito mode when they do not wish to be tracked.

Reinvention used to be an expensive exercise involving rebranding, redesign and printing of all stationery, business cards and a slap of paint on the building. It may also require a change in company culture.

These days, rebranding comes down to altering a template on a website. The secret of how to achieve this without rather massive expense comes down to three things:

1) identification with the new brand
2) a solid plan that encompasses every asset that needs to be touched
3) the ability to switch back if necessary

If you use a CMS system, such as Drupal (which we highly recommend) or WordPress (good for smaller projects) 2 and 3 are straight forward.

I liked the fact I could use my favourite virus checker on Andriod – its fast and clean. Perhaps something was wrong with the install but it ended up failing by expiring before its free period and leaving me exposed. It had expired but to renew the licence I had to login – and could not work out my username and password. So I had no choice but to remove it and start again – and decided to find a more successful ap. But then I could not remove the current virus checker and it was eating at power.

Here is how to remove the pesky application that you can not when using Android.
